Saina Nehwal stuns Chinese into silence

QINGDAO: India's Saina Nehwal played party pooper at the Sudirman Cup on Thursday after she battled to victory over China's world number three Wang Xin.

Nehwal, the world-ranked four and darling of Indian badminton, made a fantastic start, racing her way to a 5-0 and then 16-11 lead -- to the shock of a sell-out crowd in the Chinese coastal city of Qingdao.

She sealed the game 21-15, sending a hushed silence around the partisan arena.

The 21-year-old Nehwal was just as emphatic at the start of the second game, surging ahead 4-1 and then 13-4.

Wang made a half-hearted comeback but Nehwal hung on for a big point for India.

"It's very good that I beat a Chinese player in China," said Nehwal.

"China was a very tough tie for us and Wang Xin is obviously a very good player so I was expecting a tough fight.

"But I think the home pressure was too much, and I played pretty well today."

Nehwal said she had enjoyed silencing the home crowd. "I'm pretty good at that, I play very well and I beat most of the Chinese players. I don't fear them and I just want to play freely."
