Match point: Sania dazzles at engagement
11 Jul 2009, 0148 hrs IST, Prajwal Hegde, TNN

HYDERABAD: It was a match point with a difference, but tennis star Sania Mirza handled it with her usual aplomb. The 22-year-old was formally engaged to Hyderabadi businessman Mohammed Sohrab Mirza on Friday.

In an exclusive, by-invitation only function at a Hyderabad luxury hotel, the evening’s celebrations were kicked off with a ceremonial exchange of rings. Sania hadn’t seen her ring, a glittering solitaire, until the moment Mohammed placed it on her ring finger. Moments later, her eyes reflected its shine and sparkle.

Sania was dressed in a dazzling Shantanu & Nikhil, Swarovski-studded ghagra, snugly fit at the hips and gaining in flare around the ankles. Sania had picked the colours for the occasion — emerald green and gold — much in advance. ‘‘We’ve had this choker in our family for 75 years, emerald set in dull gold. It is my mother’s. Before her, it was my dadi’s and I wanted to wear it,’’ Sania said.

The assignment went to Delhi-based Shantanu, who had on a previous occasion attired Sania for an award ceremony, and he responded with an intricately embroidered three-piece ensemble.

The blouse, a mix of the East and West, done in a corset design, was complemented by a netted dupatta, which Sania fetchingly draped over her head.

Sania gets engaged to childhood friend

Tennis sensation Sania Mirza [Images] looked stunning in a specially-created green and gold outfit as she got engaged to childhood friend and family acquaintance Mohammed Sohrab Mirza at a private ceremony, amid tight security, at the Taj Krishna hotel in Hyderabad on Friday night.

Sohrab, wearing a black Armani suit, was accompanied by his parents. He presented Sania a Rs 10 lakh 2-carat diamond solitaire ring at the ceremony, marked by Muslim tradition and a touch of Deccan and Iranian culture.

Sohrab's family originally hails from Iran and the same was evident both in the ceremony and impressive dinner laid out for more than 300 guests, mostly relatives and friends.

Though the list of invitees included big names like Sachin Tendulkar [Images] and Yuvraj Singh [Images], the cricketers were not among those present.

Mahesh Bhupathi [Images], Sania's mentor and mixed doubles partner, Telugu film star Vishnuvardhan and his wife Veronica witnessed the ceremony.

Sania and Sohrab's families came with loads of gifts on trays covered with red satin cloth, embroidered in gold. In purely Hyderabadi style, the trays were loaded with outfits, jewellry, fruit, dry fruit and bangles, among other gifts.

While Sohrab's family gifted Sania 11 outfits of different styles, designed by various designers, Sania's family presented six outfits and a diamond watch to their would-be son-in-law.

Interestingly, famous anchor and film personality Rakhshanda Khan accompanied Sania as her bridesmaid.

After the ceremony was over, the guests enjoyed delicacies that included a variety of famous Hyderabadi biryani.

The police had a tough time keeping away the huge media contingent as well as a motley crowd of local fans.

The media, which was kept away from the ceremony, literally laid siege on the entrance of the hotel trying to photograph the occupants of every arriving car.

While Sania, sitting in the rear seat of her car, ducked to avoid the camera glare, other important guests used the back entrance of the hotel to avoid attention.

Some fans and admirers of Sania flooded her home with cakes that had messages expressing their feelings on it.

"Congrats Sania and Sohrab," was one of them.

This is one occasion I would not mind Party crashing just in the name of food.  What did they say again a touch of Deccan and Iranian culture.  Man I ate less than two hours back and my mouth waters thinking about what they could have served there.   For the benefit of some of you who never visited Hyd. the Iranian chain of local joints serve(used to) a great variety.  It was a real culture there in the 70's and 80's to be subsided with all the corporate culture that seemed to have set in and partly destroyed the fabric of what Hyd. food used to be.  Man the Roti and Sabzi even at the time in some Iranian restaurants was out of this world given with a side of sliced onion and lime.  I would any day trade that for the five star menu and a cup of Irani Chai and biscuits (made there called chai buscuit) that go along with it.  Good old days.

Coming back that Sania dinner last night would have been a feast for the senses and a scrumptious meal.  Man.
