KXIP playing the extra bowler today. Irfan is actually the fifth bowler plus they have Yuvi. So, the bowling depth is there.

My worry is that while our batsmen are good, no one has come good consistently yet.

Yes the score is on the lower side but the RRR will creep up as we consolidate - those two quick wickets are as good as 20 extra runs

the required rate is freaking SIX!!! thats not much

and there goes Duminy!!!

that is ok if you have wickets in hand ...not if you lose 3 upfront

anyway, GAME ON

This is awesome ...if KXIP win this, they get back to No3, Mumbai drops to No4 and RR drops to No5 - all within a point of each other.

Efficient Mumbai restrict Punjab to 119
29 April 2009, 4:20 pm

20 overs Kings XI Punjab 119 for 8 (Sangakkara 45*, Malinga 2-12)  v Mumbai Indians

Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details

How they were out

Lasith Malinga was in the wickets again for Mumbai

AFP

Mumbai Indians hardly set a wrong foot forward from the time they lost the toss, striking early through spin and keeping their hands on the jugular through Lasith Malinga's late strikes. Kumar Sangakkara kept the innings alive with an important unbeaten 45 but he had scant support and Kings XI Punjab's total of 119 was a major disappointment given they had first use of the track. Tellingly, Mumbai only allowed four boundaries and two sixes in 20 overs, the least in an innings that has lasted that long in the IPL.

For the second game running at Kingsmead spin had its say over proceedings early on.  Mumbai's slow bowlers came on well inside the first ten overs and quickly dented Punjab.

Malinga and Zaheer Khan were frugal with the new ball, but it was Harbhajan Singh's entry in the fourth over brought the wicket of Karan Goel, stumped easily. That brought about another change, Dwayne Bravo coming in and immediately accounting for Ravi Bopara with an away-swinger. The Powerplay yielded two wickets for Mumbai and just 26 runs for Punjab, which included one six and a four.

Attempting to up the tempo Yuvraj Singh was well held on the long-on boundary by Zaheer off JP Duminy - who came in the seventh over - and Mumbai were hooting and screaming. At the ten-over break Punjab were 50 for 3. Throughout the tournament the first over after the tactical break has proved jittery for sides batting first and the pattern continued. Enter Sanath Jayasuriya and third ball Mahela Jayawardene chipped a low full toss to long-on.

Batting wasn't easy with the slow bowlers purchasing grip from a track on which spin accounted for eight wickets in the afternoon's game. Sangakkara curbed himself in and knocked the ball around. The sweep was a shot he played regularly in between chopping the ball into the arc between cover and point. But there was never any real urgency from him, perhaps because of a weak lower order.

Sangakkara and Irfan Pathan had forged a match-winning stand in the last game - coming together with Punjab 48 for 4 - and the situation here was much the same except that it was two overs later today. But there would be no reprise and in the 15th over Irfan pulled Zaheer to deep midwicket. Punjab needed a big over but it never came. Malinga came back for two overs and nobody was able to get him away; Wilkin Mota and Piyush Chawla were yorked in the space of three balls.

In the last ten overs Mumbai conceded just two boundaries off the bat, Sangakkara and Ramesh Powar clubbing Bravo twice in the final over. Powar was smartly run out off the final ball of the innings and the one blemish for Mumbai was the extras column of 17, which included 11wides.

Slow progress ..but atleast we havent lost a wicket.

It is a pity that neither jayasuriya nor tendulkar are around when these spinners are on - the others may struggle against them on this pitch.

Dont tell me it will come down to Bheem (saurabh tiwary)

I always liked Ramesh Powar.  He has a classical action who gives a lot of air and importantly do not seem to have that chuckers action HS seems to have.  It is sad his body played a role in his progress at the highest level.  He had the potential.

Why are you worried about Tiwari. I think in your line up even ZK can deliver T20'ish type batting.
I mean in this line up till Maling acomes to bat, the hopes would be there. AM Nayar, SS Tiwary, PR Shah, Harbhajan Singh, Z Khan, SL Malinga
All these guys need to do is stick around.

And that was clever could not get hold of that Bravo trying to hit out and revolutions imparted in the air by Powar did the trick.

If you were captain what would posters do in this scenario ?
MI after 10 overs :
47/4
Required runs 73 t win
To bat
Duminy,Nayyar, Tiwary, PR Shah, Harbhajan Singh, Z Khan, SL Malinga

Would you ask the team to play fast or slow ? or accelerate mid inngs say after 15 overs ?

I think Punjab have the edge now ...bowlers bowling well and the rest of the batsmen - barring Duminy - are inexperienced. Pressure will tell.

Play it like RR did till yesterday ....get 25-30 runs in the next five overs without losing a wicket ...then go for it - 43-48 runs in 30 balls is tough but with Bhajji, Zaheer etc capable of throwing their bats it is atleast better than having one more wicket falling now.

bat steady and safe. Don't lose wickets till 15-16th over and score 4-5 runs an over. Nayar should get his eye in. We all know what he can do - he turned the CSK game around by smashing Freddie. 40 in last 4 is very much possible with wickets in hand.

I agree, but  you don't have YP.
Bhajj could be foxed on this wicket if he is in premeditated mood to hit. Last time he got out to full toss, seemed his bat turned a bit. When the bowler knows batsman is going to throw the bat around, it makes bit easier to bowl.
I would prefer not to say anything to bats for now and ask them to bat their natural till 14th over, and reasses from there.

Not good. I would 1-2 of the teams to win consistently and rest of them not to win. That way BRC still has a chance to reach the semifinals!

KXIP looking good in this match now.

Even otherwise, they have slowly by surely they have shown that they can compete with the better teams.

Credit is due to Yuvraj and Moody ...for taking an under strength team and staying competitive. In all the talk about captains, Yuvi somehow has been totally ignored. He has not done a bad job at all.

I agree that could make a difference here. Like I said earlier in this thread, though the MI batting looks strong on paper, it has not been able to translate into performance consistently yet. And that is what has hurt us this time as well.

PK better palced with scores as compared ot MI  after 14. They were 75/4 . Considering MI are chasing add some pressure to it.
Thus a good match on cards.

No he has not.  Seems to be showing a lot of maturity and taking the responsibility.

Another thing you mentioned is valid too the part about being a good side and competent.   Even while losing one can see how good a side can be and Kings 11 is a good side.

39 of 5 overs needed now. So far my vote is MI.
