Bangalore look to discover winning ways
25 April 2009, 4:24 pm

Match facts

April 26, 2009

Start time 12.30pm (10.30GMT)

Big Picture

For the second season in a row Rahul Dravid has had to carry a ragged Bangalore Royal Challengers

© AFP

A campaign that began so brightly with a 92-run victory for Bangalore Royal Challengers has gone into freefall. Since that victory against Rajasthan Royals, Bangalore have suffered three consecutive defeats and languish in the bottom half of the league. In order to end the losing streak in Port Elizabeth, Bangalore will have upset the Delhi Daredevils, considered by many to be favourites for the title.

Bangalore's worries stem from a top order that has failed to make use of the Powerplay overs by losing too many wickets. Their best performance during the first six overs was 49 for 3 against Kings XI Punjab on Friday. They are facing a problem similar to the one in the inaugural season where the overseas players failed to make a significant contribution. Their best batsman has been Rahul Dravid, with 144 runs at an average of 36, but he's begun most of his innings with Bangalore already in deep trouble.

Bangalore's bowlers haven't been in top form either - they've managed to take only 20 wickets in four games, 11 in the last three - and they are up against perhaps the most in-form batting line-up of the tournament. Delhi suffered a crippling blow against Chennai Super Kings, losing both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir cheaply, and few would have expected their overseas batsmen, AB de Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan, to perform the way they did. They batted with methodical aggression and have reduced the dependency on Sehwag for posting huge scores.

Form guide

Bangalore: The overseas players haven't pulled their weight. Kevin Pietersen has scored 43 runs in four innings while Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor have 32 and 36 respectively from three. Robin Uthappa has been poor at the top of the order as well with 35 runs in four innings at a strike-rate of only 71.

Delhi: Gambhir is the only top-order batsman from Delhi who hasn't got going. Sehwag plundered Punjab in a rain-curtailed innings while Dilshan rescued Delhi after the loss of two quick wickets with a feisty half-century against Chennai. The innings of the tournament, however, was de Villiers' 105 off 54 balls in his first innings of the IPL.

Watch out for

de Villiers v Bangalore's South Africans: Bangalore's squad includes Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Dale Steyn and Roelof van der Merwe and coach Ray Jennings, all of whom will have a fair idea of de Villiers' strengths and weaknesses. Of the four, though, only Kallis and Steyn may play and they'll strive to prevent the sort of damage de Villiers inflicted on Chennai.

Team news

Delhi haven't picked Glenn McGrath in their starting XI as yet, preferring the faster left-armer Dirk Nannes instead. Nannes, however, went wicketless against Chennai and Delhi might consider replacing him with either McGrath or the allrounder Farveez Maharoof.

Delhi: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag (capt), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Manoj Tiwary, 7 Daniel Vettori, 8 Dirk Nannes/Farveez Maharoof/Glenn McGrath, 9 Aavishkar Salvi, 10 Pradeep Sangwan, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Bangalore dropped Steyn for their last game and strengthened their batting by brining Taylor in but the move did not pay off. It might be time to consider using either Cameron White or Mark Boucher to strengthen the middle order. Uthappa's form has also been terrible but Bangalore do not have quality Indian batsmen on the bench to replace him.

Bangalore: 1 Robin Uthappa (wk), 2 Jesse Ryder, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 Kevin Pietersen (capt), 5 Rahul Dravid, 6 Ross Taylor/Cameron White/Mark Boucher, 7 Virat Kohli, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 R Vinay Kumar, 10 Pankaj Singh, 11 Anil Kumble.

Head-to-head record

Delhi won both their contests against Bangalore in the 2008 season. The first match was a close contest with Bangalore falling short of Delhi's 191 by 10 runs. Delhi's margin of victory at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was five wickets with ten balls to spare.

Dravid heading back to India!!

Dravid rushes back for a special person

Defeat to Kings XI Punjab would have sent Rahul Dravid to bed an unhappy man on Friday night. But all that changed around on Saturday, when he woke  up to rush home.

His wife Vijeta is to all set to give birth to their second child, and Monday is supposed to be the big day. The proud papa, who should be home well in time, will surely have been told by now that Monday is Akshay Tritiya, a very auspicious day.

When he left, most of his Royal Challengers teammates were around to congratulate him in advance but the team management will now be sweating over his return.

"He is absolutely vital to our team structure and we would like him back as soon as possible," a member of the team management said on Saturday.

But the problem is itís a family issue and Dravid had said long back that he wonít be available for the entire tournament. In fact, Vijay Mallya had given this as a reason behind handing over the captaincy to Kevin Pietersen (and Jacques Kallis).

It was informed that in a couple of days a decision will be taken on when Dravid should be back, but itís a rather delicate issue and Mallya himself will probably have to take charge. Given the team man that Dravid is, he may well relent, but will it come easy? Letís wait and watch!

Dravid flies home on paternity leave
26 April 2009, 4:29 am

The Bangalore Royal Challengers' struggling campaign has received another setback with Rahul Dravid returning home to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Dravid is expected to be in India for a few days and it is still unclear when he will return to South Africa.

Dravid has been the best batsman this season for Bangalore, leading the team charts with 144 runs at a strike-rate of 135.84. His absence leaves a hole Bangalore will struggle to fill as the squad is thin on proven Twenty20 domestic batting talent. His side have lost three of their four matches so far, and have a tough game against the in-form Delhi Daredevils on Sunday.

Dravid had been expected to miss a part of the IPL on paternity leave, and it was one of the reasons franchise owner Vijay Mallya gave for replacing him with new recruit Kevin Pietersen as captain for the second season.

They will miss him - not only because he is not in good form but also because the new recruits haven't done much so far. One would have expected the likes of Ryder, Taylor and KP to step up ...and RD's absence should, ideally, have been easier to absorb than it appears now. Strange how form has deserted Ryder and Taylor so suddenly outside NZ.

KP and Taylor finally beginning to justify their slots after a horror start

Nehra looks quite sharp.

I think Mcgrath may not be in match fit shape ...can't think of any other reason why he's not in the side. That said, Nannes has done well so far.

wtf sort of bangalore team is this.

their only 3 performers: parveen, dravid and jesse arent playing!!

even if their imposing batting lineup with ross and bouchie get them to a good score, how will they defend with this attack:

B Akhil, R Vinay Kumar, A Kumble, Pankaj Singh, KP Appanna

Why is that left arm spinner who did so well against the Aussies not playing? Or that Du Preez chap who is supposed to be a T20 champ?

Yeah him.

Normally I would take 150-160 on this pitch. But given DD's batting and BRC's bowling, I would say even 200 is not safe

The commentators were talking on the sidelines - near the DD dugout. Apparently Glenn Mcgrath has been retained more in a bowling cum coaching role ...who will play as and when required but not necessarily every match.

150 to win against a below par bowling attack - would be very surprised if DD don't get over the line.

If BRC had the same attack as in the first game, it would have been tighter.

If BRC losses this game they are for all practical purposes ouf of the IPL.  In such a scenario I do not see a reason for RD to comeback and join the team.

Not necessary. Last time, Mumbai lost its first 5 matches and then narrowly lost out on a semis berth because of a one run loss and rain.

But yeah it will be a very tough road

Dilshan going very well once again.

This batting line up looks too strong - esp against this bowling line up. They really need to self destruct in order to lose despite the relatively poor start
