Anju Bobby George does a Sania too!!!
« on: August 19, 2008, 02:47:21 PM »

... and we think why India can't produce world beating athletes, inspite of it's 1+ billion population?? When we send injured athletes to compete in Olympics, WTF do we expect them to do? Turn Superman?

Anju disappoints with three foul jumps

August 19, 2008 09:53 IST

Anju Bobby George [Images] broke a billion hearts on Tuesday when she failed to qualify for the final of the women's long jump at the Beijing [Images] Olympics [Images] after three consecutive foul jumps.

It was a big disappointment not only for Indian fans but also the athlete herself, as she failed to register even a single clean jump, stepping over the board in all three chances. <<that's so cool, isn't it?>>

It required an out of the skin showing to make it to the final as the qualifying cut out was as high as 6.75 metres or the 12 best jumps.

Since attaining her best of 6.83 metres at the Athens Games, where she placed sixth, four years ago, Anju hasn't been in the best of form, but was at least expected to go past the qualifying mark.

Now Indian medal hopes from the track and field rest in the 4 x 400 metres relay team, comprising Mandeep Kaur, Chitra Soman, S Geetha, Sini Jose, M R Povamma and K Mridula.

Anju's campaign was grounded before it could take off after she hurt her ankle the trials. <<and still she was selected? the selector should be thrown in jail.>>

"Once I injured the ankle in trials, I knew what lay in store. Still, instead of backtracking, I decided to give it a go. After all, this is Olympics and I have put in a lot of efforts just for this occasion," Anju said. <<give it a go? WTF? how did she plan to compete against other fully fit athletes? WTF? she should be banned for life for doing this to her nation. same for Sania Mirza too.>>

"But I guess once you injure your take-off ankle, you really don't have anything to do," a dejected Anju, struggling to stand on her wonky ankle, said. <<ooohhh!!! so now you understand this? you didn't know that before you signed up for the games? probably you did, but thought WTH, I might as well get a free vacation while another deserving athlete's chance it screwed.>>

It was a hat-trick of horrors for the Kerala [Images] jumper as she botched all her three attempts to fill her cup of woe.

In the 21-jumper Group B, Jacquelin Edwards of Bahamas too failed to record a single clean jump to finish with an NM tag.

Asked if she had ever injured the same right ankle earlier, Anju said, "No, this is the first time that I hurt it. It's not a strain or twist but I hurt the joint and just could not take off.

"The damage was done in the trials and it only aggravated when the qualifying round started. I could neither run nor take off," she said. <<can't run... can't take off... can only lie on the bed nursing an injured ankle... still found herself good enough to compete in Olympics? If that's not selfishness, what is?>>

Anju's performance in the recent past has not been impressive enough and the bronze medallist at the 2003 World Championship in Paris has not been able to push herself beyond the 6.55m mark this year.

Though she did not contradict when told about her below-par performances of late, Anju insisted she had been lying low all along to give her best here.

"Probably it was not great but then I did not go full throttle. All I wanted to do was to peak at the right time and give my best where it matters most. Unfortunately, my ankle held me back," she said.

"This is such a huge disappointment for me. I came here in great shape and the cut mark (6.75) for the final looked well within reach. But somehow, it was not to be today," rued the long jumper who had finished sixth in the Athens Olympics with a career-best leap of 6.83m.

Asked if it was a feasible idea to make a comeback in the 2012 Olympics Games in London [Images], Anju said, "I don't know. My mind is blind and I need time to think."

What is the big deal - it is not like she denied another long jumper a place on the team!

There are qualifying standards to make it, and she apparently passed it during the trials. And she was 6th in the last Olympics at Athens (second best performance in track and field for Indian women after PT Usha).

The comparison with Indian cricketers and others is off because they deny someone better a place. India would not have had an entry if she did not go -- so the only valid complaint is wasting money for her ticket and incidentals. Compared to all the officials who get to tag along, this is a minor infraction, if at all.

very well put...it isn;t as if india could've fielded someone else if she'd withdrawn...olympics entires are all based on individual ranking.

One point here - do we know for sure that Anju was the "sole" qualifier at the trials, and no other female long jumper crossed the qualifying mark?

Ruchir, there is a bigger battle to fight. Sania Mirza's mom went to the Olympics on IOA tab. 99 was the total squad strength, 57 athletes, 42 "officials" - including Sania's mom. How's that  ::Whip::

actually, the PTI report caused some confusion...

in reality (im taking this from an olympic forum)...Anju injured her right instep (some reports say ankle; can't be too sure) on her first attempt in the trials in the competition area in Beijing National Stadium.

further, if another indian had a jump better or equal than anju, she wouldve made it...this has nothing to do with country otherwise india would be sending atheletes to run 100 m races too,

Take that, India!!! ;D

Maybe mom went in the capacity of personal coach/astt/spot girl etc.

Dex, if I am not wrong, in Indian squad there is only one participant per event (except Tennis). This made me think that they deliberately chose only one participant per event, even though they could have chosen more, like USA or Jamaica did.

i think olympics had a qualification for track - some meters for long jump/high jump etc., timings for all track running events, and total points for heptathalon events. Athletes from countires can enter only if they pass this qualification level.

I believe qual for long jump was 6.25 m and only Anju George qualified. 2 females qualified and participated in heptathalon and finished in the last 8 overall ;).

Pride hath an injury?(an interview before the Olympics)

Usha, Anju in war of words

PT Usha has not taken kindly to Anju Bobby George's remarks that the "Payyoli Express" was not a world-class athlete in her heydays, but said she would not comment on the ace long jumper's credentials as "she is just a child."

Anju, in a television interview, had said though she would not like to belittle Usha's achievements but would not consider her as a world-class athlete.

She had obliquely hinted that Usha finished fourth in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics 400m hurdles because of the boycott by athletes from the erstwhile Eastern bloc.

When asked why Usha was not her idol, Anju said since the Kerala runner was not a world class athlete she could not be her idol.

"I am looking up to only world standard athletes," Anju had said in an interview to Malayala Manorama Television channel, adding "Milkha singh and Usha are only Asian level athletes."

Reacting to Anju's remarks, Usha said she would not want to hurt Anju now as that could affect her preparations for the Beijing Olympics.

"India is expecting a medal from Anju at the Beijing Olympics. If I answer to her comments, that will hurt her. I am not prepared to put her in such a mental state," she said.

"How can she (Anju) decide on my credentials? International Amateur Athletic Federation had selected me in 1985 and 1986 as one of the best eight athletes in the world," a hurt Usha responded.

"Anju is like a small child to me. I have seen her grow before my eyes. She has to grow further," Usha said.

To be fair Usha never commented on Anju the way she did on Usha. But both these people Anju and Sania were highly overrated by a star starved and star crazy Indian nation.

At least Anju tried her hardest till this time.
