Blake ends Federer Olympic dreams
« on: August 14, 2008, 02:15:41 PM »

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympics/tennis/7560273.stm

Roger Federer's disappointing season continued as his hopes of Olympic gold in the men's singles was ended by an inspired James Blake.

The American had not beaten the top seed in eight previous attempts, but comfortably outplayed the world number one for a 6-4 7-6 quarter-final win.

The crowd was shocked to silence when Blake deservedly broke in the 10th game to take the first set.

And Blake then held his nerve in the second set tie-break to progress.

Federer, who will lose his world number one ranking to Rafael Nadal on Monday, made a number of unforced errors and will need a dramatic reversal in fortunes if he is to successfully defend his US Open title later this month.

Blake, the world number seven, had won only one set in his previous matches against Federer, but he unnerved the five-time Wimbledon champion with a near faultless service game and aggressive forehand.

The 28-year-old broke Federer when the Swiss was serving to stay in the first set and then broke early again in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

Federer, who was struggling with his serve and forehand, broke back at 3-1 to take the game to a tie-break, where Blake earned four break points after racing to a 4-1 lead.

Federer says beating Paes-Bhupathi is "sweet revenge"

Beijing (PTI): Roger Federer was fuelled by a drive to settle a four-year-old score with the Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and having just done that, the Swiss icon is feeling relieved.

Moments after beating Paes and Bhupathi in the quarterfinal of the men's doubles event at the Beijing Olympics, Federer said the win soothed the wounds created by the defeat he and his partner Yves Allegro had to digest against the Indians in Athens Olympic Games.

"It was a sweet revenge today because I lost to them with Yves Allegro four years ago in Athens," said Federer, who looked in sublime form throughout the match which he and his Swiss teammate Stanislas Wawrinka won 6-2, 6-4.

"I mean we expected it to be much tougher but in a best two-out-of-three set doubles match anything can happen and we know that. Maybe the classic doubles teams are into the semifinals of the Olympic Games and we have a great challenge coming up," Federer said.

Asked if Thursday night's rain-interruption, when the Swiss were leading 4-1, snapped the rhythm, Federer said, "I think the lead was important. It was good to sleep well and start off in a positive mindset and continue what we have been doing."

Wawrinka, on the other hand, felt he has struck the right chord with Federer, which he felt was the reason behind their facile win against the Indians.

"It has been a great tournament for us. We've played well and we improved a lot during the last match. They (Paes-Bhupathi) were a very good doubles team but we played together and played incredible tennis.

"Getting to play with world number one player is a huge opportunity and it's great to be together in the court and hear the crowd root for us," Wawrinka added.

Not so dramatic - remember, he was a couple of pts away from wimbledon and that would have silenced most.

One cannot sustained winning nearly every game throughout one's career. Such form over 5 years itself was un believable.... He'll be back soon - IMO, he'll come back strongly next yr.

 fed has the right approach
doubles and singles are 2 different kinds of tennis and requires a different temparament and a different game
and fed considers the two to be different
and thats why i guess he is equally happy to have beaten leapesh in the doubles who many consider as the all time great pair
