Gold or Silver will be tough - since she will have to face #2 or #5 in the semis !! Bronze is still a possibility depending on who is the lsoer in the other half of the draw.

I believe even Anjali Bhagwat, Manavjit Singh etc too were Olympic class. Their record proves it. But somehow they falter at the big moment. I guess all we Indians have to introspect at some point why we have so much false pride without commensurate achievement, so to speak.. Hopefully, since we are seeing a progression from bronze (Leander Paes), to silver (Rajyavardhan Rathore), to gold now, this will give other sportpersons too the necessary confidence boost of being able to prove their mettle when it matters.

Over hyped Sania could not even finish her 1st round game!!! She is the over hyped Maharathi of India Tennis. Went to play in Olympics with an already injured wrist. The injury flared and shes out. (Link)

Which begs a question - why was she selected in the first place, when she was injured? Were the selectors aware of her injury or did she hide it like our cricketing Maharathis? Was the next in line so bad that she was not even better than an injured Sania? Or was is that we are so prone to Maharathi pooja that Sania had to go no matter what, because she is Sania Mirza?

By god, I am so mad. People should take note of her uselessness. When was the last time she won anything meaningful?

well it is our ignorance that we didnt know that the 2006 World Champ is a sure shot medal hope....media will focus on Sania Mirza's tracksuit  more than a Abhinav, but in a way it is good that he was not under too much media attention

I know Indians love to have villains and super heroes. We need one fall guy to whip. We rarely talk abut systematic issues in media or in any form of debate. Get one really great guy to manage our national sports and we will hit gold mine seems to be the thinking. Will that really work that way? Sorry, I am not saying Kalmadi is some great guy but if not kalmadi, some other tom dick or harry, what difference does it make if the system is not able to push the real  talent  to the top be it in sports management or actual sports persons?

Bhindra's gold will be all the more sweeter and more valuable if he got that gold because of a systematic improvement in Indian sports rather than he getting his gold inspite of the system.

How many people shoot in India (as a competitive sport, a real sport!)? Can you name 10 shooters from India? How many people do you think shoot in the world (as a competitive sport)? Can you name the best ever shooter (say, most championships)?

It is hugely creditable that Abhinav won but let us not twist his victory to anything to do (or not to do) with the system. India probably supports shooting to the same extent that most other countries do. It is not a spectator sport and deserves to remain at the periphery.

To me, the really impressive person here is Sania (badminton, of course). That is an ultra competitive sport - both within India and in Asia, and her ascendancy there is fantastic. I hope she goes all the way to the finals.

flute: sometimes systems are catalyzed by events. Time to celebrate this event and hope the systems will follow. Already Bindra is expected to command 2-3 crore per endorsement.. this should inspire many others to join the olympic movement

Even though shooting is not a major sport, I am sure a lot of other countries do provide opportunities for sponsorship, training, coaching support etc.how many shoot doesn't matter. The key question for me, did indian system support Bhindra in his quest? did the system provide him world class fecilities and support? or did he spend a lot of his own money to get here while the babus managing sports in India tried to slow him down at every chance?

of course. but, my question was genuine, did things already improve a little bit resulting in Bhindra's gold or he actually came up inspite of the system?

Yes, it did be great if Bhindra manages to remain a star for sometime atleast. Barring any other major achievement in Indian sports, he deserves Khel Ratna for this year too.

Through government support or private enterprise? If you compare with China, you will be right. If you compare with most other countries, I would be surprised if there is structural support different from India. Heck, we have our army encouraging it.

nah, lets leave China alone because they take it to extremes and we don't want it. Looking at other democratic countries, while the sporting achievement is thru private enterprise, how is the system able to get that private funding? do the federal govt. or state govt. have such tight control on sports bodies? are the sports bodies overall independent in India as in other countries? when it is time to make the marginal calls after selecting the obvious top performers, are the sports persons selected purely based on talent or potential instead of various politics, caste, regional bias etc. ? will you invest your private money in a sport which is managed by babus where the sports management is by selected a dole out by political parties in power?

As for Army supporting shooting, since our other systems are not good, it might seem like a good thing, but eventually, they need to get out of it.

To do this, you need to change Indian political system in it's entirety.

Do you know the budget of sports ministry? I don't and I would like to know what it is. I would like to know how much money is assigned to sports ministry, to spend on all the sport in India. THAT would answer your question. There are quite a few sports in India, for which India has national team. Like Soccer, Hockey, Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, all Track & Field events, Kho-Kho, most Swimming events, Judo, Tae-Kwon-Do, Karate, Wrestling, Boxing, many Archery events, many shooting events..... I may be missing quite a few here.

So, the point arises, that Sports ministry can spend only that much money (after eating from it), that is assigned to it in the budget. In India, sports have never been high on the agenda of families. With that trend in mind, I don't expect the budget of sports ministry to be even 0.1% of our GDP. So, whatever money sports ministry gets, it has to distribute it among all the spots affiliated with it.

I'm sure it is not a not an equal distribution. The distribution must be dependent on the popularity of the sport in India and general number of sportsmen playing it. I'm sure the number of people participating in Shooting could be counted on fingers of both hands. So, I wouldn't expect sports ministry to spend too much money on Shooting. Same was with tennis, at one time. It was an elite sport, only rich played it. So, not much govt money was spent on it. Sania Mirza spent her money (and sponsorships) in getting all the training. That is true for most nations, not just India.

You can't be dependent of govt to cure all your ills. Most of the time, govt is the problem, not the solution.

Ruchir: even worse is Sania is in the doubles with Sunita Rao and mixed doubles with Bhupathi. Withdrawing means she has screwed Sunita Rao and Mahesh Bhupathi too !!!! I'm equally pissed off - pathetic !!!!

Oh, man... this keeps getting better, doesn't it!  >:(

To me, the really impressive person here is Sania (badminton, of course). That is an ultra competitive sport - both within India and in Asia, and her ascendancy there is fantastic. I hope she goes all the way to the finals.

I just watched her 4th round match (recorded live ;)). She played an unbelievable game - was very impressive.

Yes, it did be great if Bhindra manages to remain a star for sometime atleast. Barring any other major achievement in Indian sports, he deserves Khel Ratna for this year too.

I would give it to Sania if she wins a medal !!
