Delhi bowling againt Mumbai

  PJ Sangwan 9 2 22 2 2.44 (2w)
  I Sharma 8 1 43 1 5.37 (2nb, 1w)
  R Bhatia 7 2 7 1 1.00 (1nb)
  V Sehwag 6 0 21 1 3.50

Sangwan looked very impressive when I saw him last ... again, 2 wickets here. Rajat Bhatia is good as usual and Sehwag has already done what Bhajji did in the first innings against Pak.

Good to see Ishant being released to play the match rather than cool his heels in the India dressing room.

I have never seen him. Does he have pace? At 17 he has age on his side. Why did Rohit Sharma open?

I think he was 130+ ... and he has scope to improve on that I guess.

Who knows why Rohit Sharma opened ... maybe he figured that opening is the weakest link in the Indian XI.. in terms of where a new player can hope to get in :D

I think you can allow one bad innings, I am sure he will be back to his best in the second innings or perhaps at a later date. I have full faith in Sehwag in the 4 or 5 day game but really think he should open the batting.

 S Badrinath not out 93 0 212 7 2 43.86

His run scoring is starting to get a bit silly now. Ganguly and Laxman should fear their places more from Badrinath than from Yuvraj. (Not saying that either should be dropped but they have both been in the media with places under scrutiny).

Based on this and the India A four day games, Pathan has certainly lost it in the longer form of the game.

Until the best is seen at perhaps a later date he should be confined to the Delhi team.

I have full faith in Arjun Yadav.  It means nothing.

Faith in cricket with out of form players having poor foot work does not always equate to runs in the middle which is why they are out there for.

Hmmm.... Bose bowls at the same pace. Has a far better track record. And yet has been overlooked. Along with declarations on this DG by some of our own maharathis about his lack of pace being a big negative for internationals.

When I have seen Bose bowl, he has been in the low to mid 120s but when I saw Kumar bowl, he got as high as 137pkh.

I don't remember Bose ever touching 130 ...the max I have seen would be in the 120-125 range.

However, there does appear to be some disconnect between the speed guns used in the Ranji matches and those used in the recent ODI series. Praveen Kumar was consistently clocked at above 130 in the Jaipur ODI, while in the challengers and one or two ranji matches that I saw earlier, he was under 130 more often than not. Unless this guy is bowling much faster in the ODI because he anyway has only 10 overs, we may have to try and figure out which speed gun is faulty.

Pace as we all know is only one string in the bow of a quick. Accuracy, cut of the wicket, movement in the air, bounce etc is what finally completes a bowler. In the end all things being equal, pace will give you the edge. Then again with Indian selectors age is also a factor. This is where I think Bose has missed the bus. If he was to play for India he should have been in the side 2 years ago. Now it looks like the P Kumars, Ishants stand a better chance of making the grade.

VRV gets a 7-fer and Punjab gets a slender 1st innings lead !! Kaif has to now go for an outright win or be satisfied with 1 pt !!

Strange that TN did not enforce the follow-on, I would think they need an outright win more than the 1st innings lead.

UP-Punjab match is very interestingly poised - will be interesting to see if Kaif goes for a win if the target is a tricky one....

Another decently interesting one is Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi need 328 more in 90 overs with 10 wickets in hand !!

Number Crunching

VRV Singh ended the Utter Pradesh first innings with 7/112 off 21.1, this gives him an FC strike rate of 36.8 (taking away Tests).

By comparison, and this is taking away Tests, these are the FC SRs of current Indian Test bowlers.

Zaheer Khan - 42.6
RP Singh - 45.8
Munaf Patel - 46.4
Sreesanth - 61.2

Top performers outside the Test team:

Ga*eep Singh - 48.2
Ishant Sharma - 51.8
Shib Paul - 52.2
Ranadeb Bose - 55.8

Notice how those favoured by the selection panel have better FC strike rates than their non selected counterparts...

Interesting...

36.8 is an awesome strike rate by any standards. Given what we saw of VRV, it reflects the poor quality of domestic batting, I guess.
